Laboratory Supervisor
Location: San Antonio, Texas
Employment Type: Full-Time
Position Information: TCS is looking to hire a Laboratory Supervisor to work in our San Antonio field office. This position will be supervising and working in materials testing in a laboratory setting and evaluating roadway material, inspecting manufacturing processes and contributing to the process of building and maintaining state highways. The Laboratory Supervisor will review and perform routine material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. The Laboratory Supervisor supervises other lab employees. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
In the role of Laboratory Supervisor, we will count on you to be:
- Well versed in ASTM & TxDOT test procedures for soils, aggregates, concrete and HMAC.
- Responsible for maintaining and calibrating equipment.
- Responsible for preparing material designs for concrete, hot mix asphaltic concrete, base, aggregate, and other materials.
- Reviews and conducts nuclear density tests on subgrade, base and asphaltic concrete pavement.
- Informs plant personnel of material or production problems, rejects substandard material and assists in determining cause for material problems.
- Keeps equipment mileage and service records and schedules equipment repairs.
- Reviews and performs routine material tests and inspects manufacturing processes and plant equipment in a manufacturing plant to ensure materials conform to specifications
- Reviews and prepares inspection and/or test reports.
- Reviews and records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
- Prepares and maintains field record books for each construction project within assigned office.
- Investigates compaction problems associated with hot mix asphaltic concrete.
- Prepare and reports test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
- Plans, coordinates, assigns, monitors and reviews the work of technical employees.
- Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections.
- Investigates compaction problems associated with hot mix asphaltic concrete.
- Independently performs advanced material tests, inspects manufacturing processes and plant equipment in a manufacturing plant or inspects materials at point of supply to ensure conformance to Department specifications.
- Plans, coordinates, performs, or directs testing/inspections in lab and remote areas.
- Travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses, and project sites to monitor status of programs, meet with supervisors and managers to resolve problems and perform unannounced inspection of operations.
- Ensures lab is safe and clean.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience: 10 years laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering-related activities and 5 years of Lab Management. Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent. Related college education, relevant military or technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
Licenses and Certifications
Preferred certifications or ability to acquire:
- ACI Concrete Strength Testing, AGG 101
- SB 101, SB 102, SB 103, SB 201, and SB 202
- TXAPA Level 1A, TXAPA Level 1B, TXAPA Level 2
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a vehicle

Material/Process Tech I: Performs routine material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level follow standard practices that requires minimal supervision of details.
Material/Process Tech II: Performs routine and non-routine material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all issues are referred to the supervisor.
Material/Process Tech III:Performs advanced material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties – Material/ Process Tech I:
- Assists in maintaining equipment.

Construction Inspector I / II / III
Location: Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Texas
Employment Type: Full-Time
Position Information: TCS is looking to hire a Construction Inspector I, II or III to work out of our Dallas/Fort Worth Office. This positions inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and/or complex projects statewide. Reports to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that require minimal supervision of details.
Essential Duties – Construction Inspector I:
- Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
- Calculates payments due to contractors for work completed.
- Consults with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractor’s superintendents on work progress and construction problems, reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
- Ensures adequate levels of equipment and materials are assigned to projects; ensures material tests are performed and materials meet required standards
- Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications
- Observes and inspects ongoing construction work
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Essential Duties – Construction Inspector II (all the above and):
- Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods
Essential Duties – Construction Inspector III (all the above and):
- Handles problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors and construction project field personnel

Transportation Construction Inspector
Location: Greenville or Columbia, SC
Employment Type: Full-Time
In the role of a Transportation Construction Inspector, your primary responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Perform inspection of all phases of road and/or bridge construction in accordance with training and the specified procedures.
- Perform inspection on projects requiring expertise and knowledge in multiple areas of highway construction inspection.
- Perform materials sampling and testing as directed in accordance with training and the specified procedures.
- Read and interpret plans and construction specifications.
- Compute and compile installed field quantities.
- Provide clear documentation of findings and results.

- 1 – 5 years, 6 – 10 years, or 10+ years experience in construction inspection. Compensation commensurate with experience.
- Preferred certifications: SCDOT Asphalt Roadway, Earthwork, Concrete, Foundations, and Pavement Preservation. ACI Field-Grade 1, Nuclear Gauge Safety and Hazmat, CEPSCI, Work Zone Traffic Control, and OSHA 10-hour.
- Working knowledge of MS Office, AASHTOWare Project, and ProjectWise.
- Ability to perform work on active jobsite in safe, proficient manner required.
- Strong verbal communication skills and excellent written communication skills as well as the ability to create and prepare reports.
- Mathematical skills for verifying measurements and computer skills (word,excel,etc,) for reviewing project plan sets, specifications, photo processing and filing and preparation of reports.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
